GRASSROOTS ART GRANT $,$$$’S

Talk about stretching the dollars, well, that is exactly what we did this year with the Grassroots Arts Program grant money. This grant comes from the North Carolina Legislature through the Department of Cultural Resources and is administered by the North Carolina Arts Council. All 100 counties in North Carolina receive this grant and the funding is per-capita based. It is provided to ensure “opportunities for citizens to experience the arts in their own communities.” (NC Arts Council website) The Greene County Arts and Historical Society doing business as the Greene County Museum is the recipient of the Greene County grant.
We are pleased to report how this grant provided artists to share their talents in Greene County during the school year of 2012-2013.
The Healing Force is a family of artists that offer a celebration of African culture through storytelling and music. On February 14, they gave two performances at Greene County Intermediate School which also included students from Greene County Middle School.
Donna Washington, an accomplished storyteller and author of children’s books, gave two performances at Snow Hill Primary School on March 14.
April 9, 10, and 11 found eastern North Carolina artist, Trish Hayes, doing a 3-day residency with art students at Greene Central High School. They created fabulous self-masks that were on display in the school library several days following their completion.
The Grey Seal Puppets found their way to West Greene Elementary School to perform on April 26 where they made a great impression on the students and teachers.
The funding cycle came to a great climax with a Concert in the Courtyard on June 11 featuring the Malpass Brothers and their traditional country music. It was attended by an enthusiastic audience of some 200.
Stretching the dollars, we did, so that nearly 2,000 children, youth, and adults in Greene County were provided an opportunity to experience the gifts of a professional artist in their own community.
